Color Theory 101 Art Workshop - Upcoming

If you’ve ever wanted to learn about color, this workshop is for you! I’ll be condensing what I learned during an intensive color course in college into a few hours, and you’ll learn all the basics of color, pigment, and paint. You’ll make your own color wheel during the workshop with acrylic paint on a 12″x12″ canvas. I’ll go step by step so everyone can keep up, and I’ll give you information on how you can continue your color studies on your own if you like. You’ll enjoy mixing colors, have a good time, and leave with a LOT of knowledge; all at a minute fraction of what it would cost to take a regular class in color.

This workshop will be rescheduled once the corona virus is no longer an issue.

Description

Details:
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, with short sleeves. The paint does not wash out. Pajamas or workout clothes are fine; I like to paint in pajamas. Wear whatever you are comfortable in. I have a leave your shoes at the door policy. I will send the address right before the event. We’ll have a 10 minute break every hour; feel free to bring a snack to eat/share (nut free, please). If you want to bring an alcoholic drink to sip, you may. I’m expecting this workshop to be 3-4 hours long, depending on the pace of the group.

Children: This is an in-depth workshop, and children may not be able to keep up, depending on their age. You know your child’s abilities best. If your child has difficulty completing the workshop, they can switch to just painting whatever they want on their canvas. This class is not appropriate for small children.

This workshop is limited to people I know, KCL, and their partners/friends/family. Located close to downtown Overland Park, KS. To get to the workshop, you will need to be able to climb a flight of stairs.

This is part of an ongoing series of workshops that comprehensively cover the principles of art, plus other basic art concepts. Complete all the workshops, and you’ll have lots of art you love to fill up your home, the confidence to explore making art on your own, and the knowledge to discuss art in-depth.

I am so excited to have purchased the original painting of Spectrum. Seeing April's work online really intrigued me. I had been looking for something that would really bring a spark of light into my living room. The ~3x4 size was perfect for  my empty wall and the flowing of the rainbow "spectrum" was something I've always been attracted to in an abstract image.  I decided that making the purchase of an original would be worth the gamble not knowing if I would be able to get to view it before it was snapped up by another patron. The online process was easy and April responded back to every inquiry within the day. She asked if it would be framed or left with canvas edges and the wired the painting for me.

When I first beheld the original, I was ecstatic. The texture of the canvas surface with paint thrilled me more than I expected. Each stroke of color layered in a purposeful manner but flowing as elegantly as notes from a well tuned cello. Oh my, the blend of color in each stroke is an image in it's own right! Each flick of the wrist gave the painting depth and energy, no matter if you look at a small section or if you step back for a full view. It's very meditative and dynamic at the same time. And that's the feeling from every painting of this series that April has hung in her cozy home gallery. There are always a bright few spots that draw you in and then leads you into an organic discovery of color and texture. You will not be disappointed in the quality of execution.

It was so nice to meet April in person and have her speak about her favorite pieces and what inspired them. You can tell how much she enjoys her process and the product.
